Language lessons for EU migrant workers: a step in the right direction

16 april 2025

At STE Languages, we see it as a positive development that the advisory board is advocating more language lessons for migrant workers. For some time now, we have been providing language training for migrant workers in the Netherlands, with the aim of promoting their integration, well-being and personal development.

STE Languages has developed, together with publisher KleurRijker (“Werkend Nederlands”), specific teaching materials. These bespoke training courses are specifically tailored to participants’ daily work situations. The training is suitable for companies and organisations that need good communication, in Dutch, with their migrant workers. Topics include communication with colleagues, safety, rules at work, giving and following instructions, giving and receiving feedback.

Following the words from the Minister of Social Affairs, Eddy van Hijum, “Employers should follow the example of the cleaning industry, where employees can take free language lessons during working hours” (source: ED 09-04-2025), we can report that employers in sectors such as technology, logistics, energy and food and organizations such as the Randstad Groep also facilitate language lessons in the workplace. Language is the key to participation, safety and success in the workplace, and thus also to an inclusive and resilient society.
