Why language determines the success of labour migration
3 july 2025
A new study by the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) shows that many labour migrants leave the Netherlands. They often only stay for a few years. How long someone stays in the Netherlands depends on his or her work, income and personal situation.
Many labour migrants come to the Netherlands to work and earn money. But it is not forever. According to the study, almost 75% of labour migrants have returned to their country of origin after ten years. Some only stay for a few months or years, for example because they lose their job or because the economy in their home country is improving.
The Netherlands has been a popular destination for labour migrants for years. Some only stay here temporarily, others want to settle and really participate in society. Whether it concerns a short stay or long-term integration: language plays a crucial role in both cases. Especially for highly educated migrants, who can lose a lot of knowledge and experience if they lack language skills.
Highly educated migrants must be able to integrate well into Dutch society. Language courses are an essential foundation for this group, in particular. They often have a lot of knowledge and experience, but without language their potential remains untapped.
Language makes the difference between succeeding or getting stuck in a new country. It is not only a practical tool, but the key to truly participating. Whether it concerns work, education or social contacts, language opens doors. In this way we create a close-knit, inclusive society and help internationals to grow in self-confidence and independence.
At STE Languages we offer various courses that can be tailor-made for a company and a student, with personal guidance, practice-oriented content and flexible teaching methods – so that language can be directly applied in the workplace and in social life.
